This Is Spinal Tap Director Talks About The Highly Anticipated Sequel Coming In 2024

Director Rob Reiner is already laying on the heavy schtick for the forthcoming sequel to his 1984 comedic opus This Is Spinal Tap, resurrecting his mockumentarian alter-ego Marty DiBergi in an interview with Total Film—firmly suggesting the lines of reality will be blurred, that cinematic walls one through four will be smashed, and all amps will go to eleven leading up to the film’s March 2024 release.

“Nobody told us to do anything [on the first film]. And that’s the thing that I’m worried about this next one,” Reiner said in an interview with Metal Hammer. “We hired this Marty DiBergi to come back and do this movie – he could cock it up!”

As we reported back in May, Reiner and actors Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer were heading back to Stonehenge once again for Spinal Tap II. While so far the only plot details revolve around a disgruntled Spinal TapDavid St. Hubbins (McKean), Nigel Tufnel (Guest) and Derek Smalls (Shearer)—reunited for one final show as the result of a shady contractual obligation. The band is also apparently not to thrilled with DiBergi either, for his depiction of the band on their last, ill-fated and epic American tour.

Or, as Reiner puts it, “This is a chance for [Marty] to redeem himself.” There’s still no word as to whether the new film will feature new music from Spinal Tap, and Reiner—again with his tongue practically stapled to his cheek—deflected to DiBergi. “I don’t know. Marty’s got a hook into that. Well, maybe he doesn’t even know, because he hasn’t started making it yet. You’d have to ask the band!”

Spinal Tap II is set for release on March 19, 2024. For more film updates, please visit Total Film.
