Dave Mustaine from Megadeth talked with AXS TV about how Diamond Head influenced him when he was in Metallica. He said that Diamond Head was one of the first bands that made him want to play music. During his time with Metallica, they were discovering Diamond Head a lot. Mustaine mentioned that Lars Ulrich spent time with the members of Diamond Head, making them very important to Metallica, but a Jane’s Addiction member was shocked at a Metallica audition.
He listed some songs from Diamond Head’s album, like “Lightning to the Nations,” “The Prince,” and “Sucking My Love” from Side A, and “Am I Evil?”, “Sweet and Innocent,” “It’s Electric,” and “Helpless” from Side B. Metallica played many of these songs, but Mustaine noted that fans often thought they were Metallica’s original songs because the band didn’t give credit to Diamond Head back then.
Even without the credit, Mustaine explained that the covers helped make both Metallica famous and provided Diamond Head with a lot of money. Brian Tatler, the guitarist from Diamond Head, said it was flattering for Metallica to cover “Am I Evil?” and he didn’t know it would help him financially for many years.
Mustaine has often mentioned how much Diamond Head and Tatler influenced his music. In return, Tatler has shown gratitude for Metallica’s success. Metallica played “Am I Evil?” at the 2011 Sonisphere festival, where they were joined by Diamond Head and Anthrax. Later, Tatler and Sean Harris also took part in Metallica’s 30th-anniversary celebration in San Francisco, where they performed “Am I Evil?” together.
