Music was at the centre of MTV’s Video Music Awards show, where Red Hot Chili Peppers performed. The band started with ‘Black Summer’ from their album earlier this year titled Unlimited Love. It was followed by an instrumental that got the tone for the show to become grandeur. The following piece was their smashing hit ‘Can’t Stop’ from their 2002 album By the Way. The band’s bassist Flea danced on the front section of the stage and swirled as the fans cheered the performance.
The band gave the fans their event money’s worth. They didn’t forget to honour late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong presented them with their 2022 VMA Global Icon Award during the tribute. Chad Smith’s drum set embellished a delineation of a hawk with Taylor’s name across the wingspan. Smith took that moment to dedicate the performance to Hawkins and his family. He said he misses his friend dearly every day with a message ‘Fly on Hawk, fly on brother.’
Anthony Kiedis took this a step further by thanking everyone on planet earth for listening to them over the years. He also thanked his bandmates for giving him a life purpose for the last 40 years. It was a moment of bliss for those in attendance and those that watched it in some capacity.
