A lot strange things were happening at the turn of the century, including the circumstances under which Korn singer Jonathan Davis recorded his vocals for the Korn classic “Freak On a Leash” from their heady 1998 LP Follow the Leader.
“Everyone was out of their fucking minds. Alcoholic drug addicts!” Davis told Metal Hammer recently. “I just remember all the excess: we’re kids, living our rock and roll dreams and having the time of our lives.”
Produced by top-shelf hitmaker Steve Thompson (Guns N’ Roses, John Lennon, Tesla) with assistance from Toby Wright (Alice in Chains, Metallica), Follow the Leader introduced a break from producer Ross Robinson, who helmed Korn‘s previous two recordings. But, apparently, Robinson still acted as a vocal assistant to Davis during the making of the album. As the singer recalls, Robinson‘s methods were, shall we say, unorthodox?
“‘Freak On A Leash’ was where Ross was digging his nails into my back! That was some weird shit, real fucked-up. Once I got to that moment I was like ‘I’m done with this, this is fucking stupid.”
Yeah, that is pretty stupid. Also, good luck now listening to “Freak On a Leash” and not getting that visual. Ouch! Korn and Davis are currently on the road (hopefully unscathed) with Evanescence and you can find those dates, along with the timeless video for “Freak On a Leash” right here.
