As they release the deluxe edition of their hugely successful ‘Scoring The End Of The World’ album, Motionless In White frontman Chris Motionless talks us through the new songs and remixes and their latest music video for ‘Sign Of Life’.

ROCK SOUND: The newly-released deluxe edition of the album contains a couple of new songs – ‘Hollow Points’ and ‘Fool’s Gold’. Were those part of the original album sessions?

CHRIS: These are two songs that were cut from the album. ‘Hollow Points’ was entirely recorded and ready to be put on the album but we made the decision at the last minute – it just didn’t feel ready yet. It’s so funny because we forgot to take the liner notes for that song out of the booklet so fans were like ‘what is this? What does this mean?’. And I laughed and thought, well, I guess you’ll find out on the deluxe edition. Then with ‘Fool’s Gold’, everything but the vocals was done and ready to go. It didn’t feel necessary for the album but it was a cool track. So I wouldn’t call them new songs. They are bonus tracks or b-sides, whatever the term is now. They are just a cool extension of the album and kind of expand a bit on extra topics that the rest of the album didn’t cover.

RS: There is also ‘Porcelain: Ricky Motion Picture Collection’. You have previously said that the ‘Another Life: Motion Picture Collection’ version you did is the thing you are most proud of.

CHRIS: It is absolutely a passion project. If I could thank fans for some of the biggest things that I hold close to my heart and my soul, it is that they have given us the ability to be in a career where we don’t have to crank out single after single to stay alive. We have a foundation where we can do things that aren’t going to be massive singles or these big, rock anthems. We can go and work on passion projects and that is so amazing and fulfilling to me. Doing these orchestrated versions of songs is so necessary to my soul, musically. The ‘Another Life’ version was a pandemic passion project and is something I will never forget. It was the most emotional thing I’ve ever done. It meant so much to me in that timeframe of my life. Doing a ‘Porcelain’ version for the deluxe version was a great way to expand on that while trying something different.

RS: You have just done a music video for ‘Sign Of Life’. Why did you decide now was the time to give that particular track a moment to stand out like this?

CHRIS: The success of ‘Masterpiece’ and ‘Werewolf’ gave us the confidence to push towards another single. Fans had voiced that they really like ‘Sign Of Life’, this bigger, anthem song. We love the song as well, it really hits live and just gives this ‘Reincarnate’ Motionless-era vibe. The video is definitely meant to show one last look before the album cycle is done and switch shit up a bit. Then we call it a day and start working on the next one.

RS: There is a remix of ‘Timebomb’ on the deluxe edition too. It was a standalone single originally but does it still feel like part of this wider era to you?

CHRIS: I think it does, particularly in the lyrical sense because it was the first song that was written about my experience within the pandemic. We were just about to come back and start playing shows again and it was this song that discussed what my personal feelings were within that timeframe and what was it going to be like when we came back? There is a lot of anxiety and questions about what the world would be like for live music and bands. I think that song is definitely the first song written for the album but predates it if that makes sense.
