Drummer Matt Cameron recently reminisced about the time Soundgarden and Nirvana played a show together, 36 years ago this week. Taking to his Instagram he dropped a throwback photo from 1988 when Soundgarden, Nirvana, My Name and Swallow played at Olympia Lake Jam / Capitol Lake Jam in Olympia, WA.

In the caption, he recalled how Krist Novoselic had brought KFC chicken to the show and placed the box inside drummer Chad Channing’s rack tom. He revealed that it was hysterical to watch him eat between the songs.

Cameron recalled that Soundgarden had had just released the ‘Fopp’ EP and they even attempted to perform the dub version of ‘Fopp’ live. Here is what he wrote:

“[In] 1988 Soundgarden, Nirvana, My Name and Swallow played the Olympia Lake Jam in Olympia WA. Krist [Novoselic] brought a box of Kentucky Fried Chicken to the gig and before their set, he placed the KFC box inside [drummer] Chad [Channing’s] North(!!) rack tom. It was hysterical watching him eat chicken between songs. SG had just released the ‘Fopp’ EP and we attempted to perform the dub version of ‘Fopp’ live, along with other songs we were performing at that time. I ran into Kurt [Cobain] many years later at the Neil Young/Sonic Youth show in Seattle and we shared a laugh about the Olympia gig. That night he said he really wanted to play another show together with Beat Happening as the opener. I said YES immediately. Sadly it never happened, but the Olympia Lake Jam will always be a fun memory.”

Nirvana and Soundgarden have both reached legendary status as two of the greatest bands of the alternative rock 90’s. Cameron currently plays for Pearl Jam, but he first gained popularity as the drummer for Soundgarden, which he joined in 1986.

He appeared on each of the band’s studio albums until it split in 1997. In 1998, Cameron was invited to join Pearl Jam’s U.S. Yield Tour and then became a permanent member of the band. In 2010, Cameron became a member of both Pearl Jam and the reunited Soundgarden at the same time. He remained with Soundgarden until it disbanded following the death of frontman Chris Cornell in 2017. Cameron, along with guitarist Kim Thayil and Cornell, is one of the three members to feature on every Soundgarden studio album.
