Music icons LL Cool J, Janet Jackson and Rufus & Chaka Khan have been nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
This will be the fifth time LL Cool J has been considered for induction into the Hall. The first time was in 2009 for induction into the 2010 Rock Hall but he didn’t get the call that go around. The rap veteran was also nominated for induction into the 2011, 2014 and 2018 Rock Hall, and was denied entry each of those times.
So far, Tupac Shakur, N.W.A, the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Run-DMC and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five have been the only rap acts that have been enshrined into the coveted Hall, which is located in Cleveland.
Jackson was first nominated in 2015. The 52-year-old R&B legend got her start in the mid-’70s on the variety show starring her her family’s band, the Jacksons, and, since launching her solo career in the ’80s, has delivered classic albums like Control, Rhythm Nation 1814 and The Velvet Rope, selling approximately 160 million records worldwide and inspiring generations of pop stars like Beyoncé and Britney Spears.
Finally, Rufus & Chaka Khan are a legendary soul/funk group from Chicago who garnered success in the ’70’s with their classic tunes like “Masterjam,” “Tell Me Something Good” and “Sweet Thing.” Khan has been nominated for the Rock Hall four times – twice as a solo artist and twice with the group Rufus.
Other 2019 nominees include Kraftwerk, Devo, Def Leppard, MC5, Stevie Nicks, the Zombies, Radiohead, John Prine, Roxy Music, the Cure and Todd Rundgren.
To be eligible for nomination, an individual artist or band must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of induction.
The final list of inductees will be announced in December 2018. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2019 Induction Ceremony will be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., on March 29, 2019.
