Pearl Jam wrapped their two-night stand on September 3 & 4 at New York’s Madison Square Garden Wednesday. Following the show, frontman Eddie Vedder once again won the hearts of his fans with a heartfelt gesture.

Vedder drove out at a quarter to one following the show. One fan revealed that he stopped the car for the handful of people who were waiting and he gave a security guard a couple of guitar picks to hand out to fans.

Pearl Jam’s tour in support of their 12th studio album, which is titled Dark Matter, rolled into New York City’s Madison Square Garden for the first of two sold-out shows on Tuesday, September 3rd. Many members of the crowd at the show were on their feet for the duration of the two-hour-and-10-minute concert, singing along with lead vocalist Eddie Vedder at the top of their voices.

The band performed six songs from Dark Matter during their set including a heavy and rocking version of “Scared of Fear,” “Do the Evolution,” and Even Flow.” The show featured Vedder’s powerhouse lead vocal, solid work by the rhythm section of Ament and Cameron, and an incredible guitar break by McCready in the song’s midsection.

McCready’s playing throughout the concert was great. Vedder spoke to the crowd after the performance of “Scared of Fear” and with United States’ general election looming in two months, concluded his remarks by saying to the fans, “Don’t complain. Vote!”

In between songs throughout the show, Vedder had been reading out fan messages. Some of those were birthday greetings for fans in attendance at the concert. The main set drew to a close with intense performances of “Given to Fly” and “Porch.”

A couple of minutes following the band’s exit from the stage, Eddie Vedder returned by himself and performed a cover of John Lennon’s ”Imagine” while accompanying himself on acoustic guitar.

Meanwhile, On the second night, Pearl Jam were joined by two very special guests, E Street Band guitarist Stevie Van Zandt and producer Andrew Watt, who produced the band’s latest album, Dark Matter.

Eddie Vedder gave a shout-out to Little Steven before performing the Dark Matter track “Won’t Tell” and mentioned him before performing another track from the album, “Waiting for Stevie,” although the song isn’t about him. The performance saw Watt on guitar, and Watt also joined the band for a performance of the Vs. track “Rearviewmirror.”

Eddie went on to pay tribute to Bruce Springsteen’s old friend and guitarist during his solo portion of the encore, performing “I Am A Patriot,” which was written by Van Zandt and made famous by Jackson Browne.

Little Stevie finally got in on the action during the show’s penultimate song with a roaring rendition of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World,” featuring not only Stevie but Watt, show opener Glen Hansard and Hansard’s band.

Elsewhere in the show, Pearl Jam performed the Vs. track “Glorified G” for the first time on the tour. Eddie Vedder revealed to the fans that it was a request from a friend. He also discussed how he doesn’t like performing the song because it’s about guns, mentioning Wednesday’s shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia. The set also included a performance of the Ten track “Jeremy,” which was inspired by gun violence.

Other highlights of the night included a performance of John Lennon’s “Gimme Some Truth,” Eddie and Glen collaborating on Glen’s tune “Song of Good Hope” and the tour debut of the band’s cover of the Dead Boys’ “Sonic Reducer.”

Pearl Jam’s next stop will be Philadelphia for a couple of shows on September 7 and September 9.
