BRING ME THE HORIZON Vocalist’s High School Hustle Was Selling Bootleg Nü-Metal Compilations

Everyone needs to make a buck. Especially when you’re in high school and, week after week, a killer show comes to town that you absolutely have to go see. Well, Bring Me the Horizon vocalist Oli Sykes recently revealed what his quick change operation was back in the day: selling bootleg CD-R compilations of the best nu-metal tracks available.
In a post to Instagram, Sykes wrote “My brother found my bootleg compilations I used to make and sell at high school lol. 5 quid each or 3 for a tenner along with every unofficial Eminem album that ever existed. Big up valley cru.”
Sykes post included a photo of two of his most fabled collections: Quakebeat, and its sequel Quakesound. Chances are that if you attended Stocksbridge High School in South Yorkshire, England with Sykes, you may have one of his gems rattling around in a box somewhere, filled with killer cuts from Crazy Town, Limp Bizkit, Rob Zombie, Papa Roach, and insane amount of Linkin Park. And given the recent rise in nü-metal again, these compilations would probably do pretty well!
In a recent interview with NME, Sykes took a pulse check on the state of rock. “Quite a few years ago, we were disillusioned with rock, but the last couple of years I have come to feel very different about that,” Sykes said. “It’s very exciting to now see a lot of young kids getting into alternative styles and sounds. It feels so much more diverse than ever before.”
