Clinic Have Wild in the Streets Ahead—Here’s Where to Start

Clinic are heading toward the dance floor by their own peculiar route. Excellent. We would be disappointed if they arrived in a straight line.

The band’s tenth album, Wild in the Streets, is announced for October 30. Ahead of it, “Energies” offers a public introduction to this chapter. In Domino’s announcement, Ade Blackburn connects the single’s late-night party idea with Funkadelic, Carl Douglas and Cabaret Voltaire.

The creative partnership is the other detail worth following. Blackburn describes his interest in songs and melody alongside Hartley’s long-standing attraction to electronics, drum machines and rhythm. The two have known each other since school, giving their differences plenty of time to become a working language.

That is an inviting way into a band with a substantial catalogue. Begin with “Energies,” then look back to Internal Wrangler and Free Reign to explore earlier points in the journey. Each record gives the partnership another set of decisions to make.

For now, the new single and the musicians’ own explanation are the story. The full twelve-track album still has its release ahead, and deserves its own hearing when it arrives.

We like a group willing to keep its odd corners intact after so many records. “Energies” is the next available door. October 30 is on the listening calendar.
