Three Years of Sampha’s Lahai: Time for Another Listen

An album anniversary is a perfectly respectable excuse to cancel an evening of aimless scrolling. Sampha’s Lahai turns three on October 20. We have our excuse.

Released in 2023 through Young, it followed Process and the earlier Dual EP. Sampha’s official album account places the record within a creative life that extends across songwriting, production, collaboration, film and fashion.

For a compact return, take “Spirit 2.0,” “Dancing Circles” and “What If You Hypnotise Me?,” the last credited to Sampha and Léa Sen. They offer three points within the original fourteen-track sequence, rather than turning an anniversary into a greatest-hits exercise.

The smaller pieces matter as part of that sequence, too. “Satellite Business,” “Time Piece” and “Wave Therapy” sit among the longer songs. Give those transitions their place instead of treating the album as a folder of tracks to sort by length.

There is a useful distinction between recognizing a voice and spending time with the world an artist builds around it. A guest appearance can lead you to Sampha; an album gives him room to decide where you go next.

Put Lahai on from the beginning. Let three years be a reason to return with fresh attention, whether you know every turn already or are meeting the record for the first time.
