Digable Planets: Stay for More Than Cool Like Dat

“Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)” is an excellent introduction. It would be a shame if it were also the end of the conversation.

Digable Planets brought Butterfly, Ladybug Mecca and Doodlebug together for a version of hip-hop with jazz in its bloodstream and plenty on its mind. Their official biography traces the trio from Reachin’ to Blowout Comb, then through separate projects and back onto stages together.

For a deeper listen, follow “Where I’m From” and “La Femme Fetal” into Reachin’, then spend some time with Blowout Comb. The latter is central to the group’s discussion of Black liberation; there is more here than a comfortable groove to put behind another activity.

The individual paths are worth following, too. Butterfly is Ishmael Butler, whose projects include Shabazz Palaces. Mecca has worked with BROOKZILL!, while Doodlebug—Craig Irving—has recorded as Cee Knowledge. Three artists, three directions, and a shared history that still matters.

Their 2017 Digable Planets Live album offers another way in, bringing the catalog into a live-band setting. The official site keeps music, videos and current show information together.

We are happy to see this group remain part of the conversation. And judging by that photograph, nobody has misplaced their sense of style.

Go beyond the familiar single. Sometimes a song you know by heart is sitting right beside several you should have met years ago.
