Catching up with the Beastie Boys brings back an awful lot of possibilities. “Sabotage.” Paul’s Boutique. A record collection that refuses to sit quietly in one genre. Pick a starting point and the afternoon is in trouble.
There is also something newer to follow: Mike D’s 5D: Thank You. Universal Music’s announcement set the album for August 28, 2026, and traced its beginnings to experiments at home with his sons, Skyler and Davis.
That family detail is the part we keep coming back to. The artist becomes the parent making things with his kids, and the kids become collaborators with their own ideas. It is a lovely way for a creative life to keep moving.
Carter Lang, Jared Solomon, Ging, Jason Lader, Eddie Ruscha and Tyran Donaldson are among the credited collaborators in the announcement. The “True Colors” visualizer is linked there, too.
The cover is a little object of fascination in its own right: pink and yellow shapes arranged around a purple center, somewhere between an elaborate pinball machine and a very fancy control panel. The artwork credits include Can Can Press, Thad Higa and Charles Deroyan.
None of this replaces the chemistry of Mike D, Ad-Rock and the late MCA. That work has its own permanent place. But we can love the group and still be curious about what comes after it.
Return to a Beastie Boys favorite, then follow Mike D’s new project. The history and the next idea can share the turntable.
