GHOST Goes Viral On TikTok And, Naturally, Fan Reaction Is Mixed

Ghost‘s track “Mary on a Cross”, from their 2019 EP Seven Inches of Satanic Panic EP, has gone viral, thanks to a TikTok user who used the track in a video clip that—not surprisingly—also featured Stranger Things content. You can check out the post below.

Much like Metallica‘s “Master of Puppets” and Kate Bush‘s “Running Up That Hill,” the online attention shot the Ghost song up into Spotify’s Viral 50 Global chart, where it currently sits as number #9. (“Number nine… Number nine…” )

As will happen, many OG Ghost fans were torn. Some were grateful for the exposure and happy to see the band’s popularity expand (even more). Others, predictably, were less impressed.

“I’m not bothered about ‘Mary on a Cross’ being used on TikTok but I AM afraid of the inevitable day I hear a 12-year-old singing it in public,” posted one Twitter user.

“People can buy tickets only because of ‘Mary on a Cross,’ I don’t care it might be their way of getting introduced to the band and fall in love with them, I don’t care,” said another social media user. “But if I see someone saying they went to ritual ONLY to hear it and then walked out of the venue… I’m throwing hands.” [via Loudwire]

As a neutral, I can see both sides of the argument. But, were I pressed on the issue, I’m leaning closer to being happy for the band, and welcoming to new fans.
