In Lollapalooza: The Uncensored Story of Alternative Rock’s Wildest Festival DAVE NAVARRO recalls being ON DRUGS while fighting JANE’S ADDICTION frontman PERRY FARRELL.
Jane’s Addiction have had a fair amount of drama throughout their long music career, with the latest dramatic moment coming in the form of an onstage fight between guitarist Dave Navarro and frontman Perry Farrell this past September – a fight that forced the band to cancel the rest of their tour and left their future uncertain.
Now, Navarro is recalling a similar moment between him and Farrell that took place during the very first show of the very first Lollapalooza in 1991 (a traveling music festival conceived by Farrell).
Leading up to the show, Navarro had been trying to get clean, but struggled. Shortly before they were set to take the stage in Chandler, AZ, Navarro found himself unable to move due to the amount of drugs in his system.
“I had gotten too high on h*roin,” Navarro recalls in the book “Lollapalooza: The Uncensored Story of Alternative Rock’s Wildest Festival” by authors Richard Bienstock and Tom Beaujour. “So then I was given c*caine … took a handful of pills and drank a bunch. By the time I got onstage, I didn’t know which way was up.”
According to witnesses, once Navarro and Farrell (who was also on drugs) were on stage they got into a fight, attacking each other in front of the audience.
Farrell, however, doesn’t remember it that way. “I thought we were off the stage. I didn’t know that we were on the stage. Were we?” he says in the book.
